Nonprofit boards in senior living are asked to govern an increasingly complex business: regulated healthcare, real estate development, actuarial risk, and a resident population that is also, in effect, a constituency. Most board members arrive from other fields.
The result is predictable. Meetings fill with operational detail because operations are legible, while the genuinely strategic questions get deferred. Or the board defers so completely to management that no real oversight happens.
What this looks like
Board education programs. A structured curriculum that gets trustees fluent in the economics of your business: entrance fee models, days cash on hand, occupancy and mix, capital cycles, and what actually drives the actuarial picture. Built as a repeatable platform, not a one-time orientation.
Study session design and facilitation. I have facilitated more than twenty board study sessions and executive retreats. The work is in the design: what material goes out in advance, how the question is framed, and how the session ends with something decided.
Decision rights. A written map of what the board decides, what management decides, and what comes to the board for endorsement. This single document resolves a surprising number of recurring frictions.
