Board & Executive Retreat Facilitation

“You have one day with everyone in the room and you cannot afford for it to be pleasant and inconclusive.”

What people usually say

A retreat is expensive. Everyone’s calendar, the venue, the preparation, and the opportunity cost of the day. The measure of whether it worked is not how the room felt at four o’clock. It is what is different a month later.

I facilitate board retreats, executive team retreats, and board study sessions. More than twenty of them so far.

What independent facilitation buys you

The CEO gets to participate. When the chief executive facilitates, they cannot advocate. When a trustee facilitates, the dynamic gets awkward fast.

The hard question gets asked. An outside facilitator can name the thing everyone is working around, and can do it without spending internal capital.

Design, not just moderation. Most of the work happens before the day: framing the question, deciding what material goes out in advance, sequencing the agenda so the group reaches the real decision while they still have energy for it.

A record. Decisions, rationale, owners, and next steps, written up and circulated while the day is still fresh.

Format

A pre-session working call with the chair and CEO, a review of the relevant materials, agenda design, facilitation of the session itself, and a written summary. Half-day and full-day formats.

Is this the right fit?
